Background

During my time at CGI, I worked with a large enterprise resource for government entities, which required Section 508-compliant documents and WCAG 2.2-complaint websites. Their goal is to transform policies, processes, and systems.

After training, I followed the standards for accessibility and manually tested and approved documents and web pages for the client. I ensured they complied to the visual, content, and functional design rules set in place.

When content issues arose, I reported them to the writer and suggested accessible solutions for approval (e.g., using color alone to convey changes in content). Once I manually tested the documents, I converted them to PDF and ran an accessibility report to verify reading order, content tags, troubleshooting any errors that appeared, and finding solutions as needed. I tested the sites keyboard navigation and reading order and ensured they were accurate.

Result

As a result, making documents accessible not only kept them consistent in style, but also opened access to many users not considered. When testing for web pages I was able to find small things that were not noticed by other team members. Making sure everything was accounted for was important for me and provided an extra layer of testing the team needed.

Reflection & Learnings

Before my time on the project, I was proactive in learning accessibility, which is why I volunteered to help the Accessibility Lead design a checklist for the Human-Centered Design practice. I also took training for web and document accessibility to fully secure my understanding of the tools and resources necessary for testing. When I started working with the client, I was well equipped to translate that knowledge into document and web testing.

“Nick has been a great asset to the team. He has been providing accessibility on Deliverable Expectation Documents and Deliverables since the end of May. In addition, cleaning up the tracking and comments is requested for some documents. As requests are sent to Nick, he is able to turn them around promptly and prioritize according to PMO requests. Nick will ask questions if the request is unclear. Nick's work is high quality and no issues have been encountered. Nick's work for the client exceeds expectations if a rating were to be given for Feedback.”

“Nick has done a great job stepping into the role of supporting document accessibility! I met with him only a few times to discuss how to test/remediate documents for accessibility and after that he was able to pick up the reins immediately to support the PMO. ...Nick is paying a crucial role in helping us to deliver with the quality they expect! Nick had also been helping me to create some accessibility content within Figma. He volunteered to help with this and had new updates to share each time we met. He asked insightful questions that demonstrated he had researched the topic that he was asking about beforehand. I've really appreciated his support!”
